Lime Softener Tanks

Lime Softener Tanks

This was the first painting I did in the chemical plant series and is probably the most unique of all of them. I had never done any kind of landscape paintings or used atmospheric perspective in anything before, so it was really just an experiment to see how I was going to go about painting the series. Over the course of about six chemical plant compositions my methods evolved and I became happier with the work. I would say the big difference in this one is the sky being so bright and emotionally charged. A lot of people like this one the best, but I have to say that I really prefer the more subtle statements made in the other paintings. Also, I feel there are some problems with the lighting which I never really was able to resolve. Looking back on it now, it seems that the foreground should be more silhouetted against such a bright background. The way I have it here is like it is being lit from the front left and I think that is the wrong way to have gone about it. The other difference is this is the most close up image and therefore it has a lot more detail. That is because it is very near the fence and I was able to get tremendously better research photographs of it to paint from.

The structure itself is used to prepare lime for different uses throughout the plant. It isn’t anything overly dangerous, but I thought the shapes of the tanks were pretty cool. I mixed some lime powder in with my paint, again, just for the novelty of it. Another interesting fact is that since painting this, these buildings have been torn down and no longer exist. I didn’t know this was going to happen, but at least now they are preserved for people to see in some form. This painting was in the 2009 West Virginia Juried Exhibition at the Huntington Museum of Art in Huntington, WV.
